A week ago, on Saturday, November 30, I peacefully protested in Vienna against the planned coalition of parties that lost the elections in September, against war, tyranny and Austria’s renunciation of neutrality. If this form of protest were ineffective, as the supporters of the rioters claim, there would have been no water cannons and police squadrons with dogs at this demonstration.

Heroes’ Square was closed off. The police let in around 1,000 demonstrators and then closed all entrances completely. Those arriving in Vienna by train at this time were not allowed off the trains.

Peace demonstration in Vienna 30.11.2024.

The demonstration was banned one day before the planned date because it would allegedly disrupt pre-Christmas business. In the end, it was approved after all. Typical actions by politicians who use the police to try to stop protests against their “beloved” authorities. After two hours, the police ordered the protesters to end the demonstration and leave Heldenplatz (Heroes’ Square), which had been cordoned off as a precaution. Polite police officers advised them to use another exit, where other police officers with dogs were already waiting, barking at the “far-right” demonstrators with pro-government dogs.

This was to prevent the demonstrators trapped in the square from joining forces with those who had no access. Despite the large-scale deployment of the police, none of the demonstrators could be provoked into unlawful action. The ORF television team waited in vain with its cameras for spectacular footage.

Anyone expecting the government to meekly resign after such a protest will be disappointed. Mahatma Gandhi did not throw the British out of India after a single demonstration. It is an effective but lengthy process against tyranny.

Why is peaceful, collective protest the best remedy against tyranny? Source. The UnCut-News article published on Thursday reads:

Peaceful mass refusal is not just a tactic but a philosophy rooted in the belief that tyranny cannot be maintained without the complicity of the governed. Historical movements, from Indian independence to the fall of apartheid, have demonstrated their transformative power. In a world confronting new forms of authoritarianism, the lessons of peaceful resistance are more important than ever. By banding together and refusing to accept injustice, ordinary people can create extraordinary change and prove that true power lies with the people, not the oppressors.

Strength will give way before love.
