Primum non nocere – furst, do no harm! This motto is attributed to Hippocrates. At the time he laid the foundations of modern medicine, it seemed that this was how medicine should work. For more than 100 years, since the oil extraction industry took control of medicine, the more appropriate slogan has been: First and foremost, make money!
I don’t see a problem with doctors making money – it goes without saying that no one can work without having the means to make a living. I do see a problem with earning money by harming patients. It doesn’t matter if the doctor realizes that he is a cog in a machine that produces more and more sick people. Since he is taking on a task that involves human lives, he accepts this responsibility. Excuse: I didn’t know that I was being cheated during my studies and training, that doesn’t justify anything.
Despite – or perhaps because of – the enormous resources being pumped into the healthcare system, we are getting sicker every year. New diseases are created to justify the use of “medicines”. These in turn are partly responsible for the development of further diseases.
